Gordon Moore to be honored Gordon Moore to be honored (September 15, 2004)

Gordon Moore of Woodside has made history in two important ways: as a descendant of one of the pioneering families that founded Pescadero, and as the visionary co-founder of Intel, the computer chip company that helped launch today's computer revolution.

The San Mateo County Historical Association will honor Mr. Moore for both these roles at its History Makers 2004 benefit dinner Thursday, September 30, from 6:30 to 10 p.m., at the Hotel Sofitel in Redwood City.

Mr. Moore's great-great-grandfather came West in 1847, before the Gold Rush, and ended up in Pescadero on the San Mateo County coast.

His father, Walter Moore, started a career in law enforcement as the elected constable for the Coastside in 1923, and retired 20 years later as chief deputy sheriff for the county.

Mr. Moore is most famous for "Moore's Law," first published in 1965, which predicted the explosive growth of computer power. As stated on www.intel.com, Moore's Law predicts that the density of transistors on an integrated circuit will double every couple of years, leading to better performance and lower costs. That was 1965, and it's still happening 39 years later.

In 1990, Mr. Moore received the National Medal of Technology from former President George H.W. Bush. In 2000, Mr. Moore and his wife established the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to support projects that benefit the environment, science, higher education, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
