Election 2004: League of Women Voters' election forums go to college
(September 22, 2004) The League of Women Voters is taking its election forums to three local colleges with the aim of energizing young voters and getting more of them to the polls.
The South San Mateo County League of Women Voters and the Midpeninsula Community Media Center are organizing election forums at Canada College, Stanford University and Foothill College.
The forums places, dates and topics are:
** Canada College, Woodside, Main Theatre, Monday, September 27, candidates for Congress, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and candidates for state Senate, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
** Same location, Wednesday, September 29, noon to 1 p.m., debate on Proposition 66, which would amend the three-strikes law and require that the third strike be a violent felony rather than any felony at all.
** Same location and date, 1 to 2 p.m., debate on Proposition 72, which would require employers who have more than 20 employees to provide health-care coverage.
** Foothill College Appreciation Hall, Los Altos Hills, Monday, October 4, noon to 1 p.m., debate on Proposition 71, which would fund stem-cell research in California; from 1 to 2 p.m., state Assembly candidates.
** Same location, Wednesday, October 20, noon to 1 p.m., Proposition 66 debate; and 1 to 2 p.m., Proposition 72 debate.
** Stanford's Tressider Union, Monday, October 18, from 7 p.m. to 7:40 p.m., debate on Proposition 72; from 7:40 to 8:20 p.m., Proposition 66 debate; and 8:20 to 9 p.m., Proposition 71 debate.
The public is welcome to attend the free forums.
The Peninsula Community Foundation is arranging for the forums to be videotaped
by the Midpeninsula Community Media Center and streamed on the Internet.
People can go to the Media Center's Web site -- www.CommunityMediaCenter.net
-- at any time up to election day and click on a particular question to
view the answers that were given at a specific forum, said Ms. Craig.
The programs will play frequently on community cable channels throughout
the Peninsula, she said. The playback schedule for Palo Alto, East Palo
Alto, Menlo Park, and Atherton can be found on www.CommunityMediaCenter.net.
