Record requests for absentee ballots
(October 06, 2004) Even before November 2, San Mateo County elections officials are finding one ballot count to be noteworthy: the number of permanent absentee ballots requested in the county.
For the first time, that figure has topped 100,000, Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum said. That represents 30 percent of the county's registered voters, he said.
Mr. Slocum said he was "encouraged and enthusiastic" because absentee voters have a notably high turnout rate.
Residents can request absentee ballots until the October 26 deadline. For more
information, go to www.shapethefuture.org
and click on "Absentee Voting."
The deadline to register to vote is October 18.
