(October 06, 2004) Lambert and Sinnott the right choices
Editor:
Two eminently qualified City Council candidates presented themselves at the recent League of Women Voters forum in Menlo Park.
Mike Lambert, a lifetime resident of the city and a local architect, demonstrated the same logical, solution-oriented thought processes that he brought to recent discussions about residential fire sprinklers. His experience as a planning commissioner and his involvement in other important local issues shows that he is ready to propose concrete solutions for subjects such as traffic management and funding of essential city services in our challenging economic climate.
Lorie Sinnott, who also grew up in Menlo Park, has a long history of community involvement in charities, schools, and 10 years service on the Planning Commission. She has clearly articulated ideas about current issues such as residential zoning and neighborhood traffic, and places fiscal responsibility high on her list of priorities for the council.
I was disappointed that the two other candidates, Kelly Fergusson and Andrew Cohen, are basing their candidacies on their opposition to the current council members with whom they would serve. Even though Ms. Fergusson touts her expertise with the city's residential zoning needs, her only specific recommendation to date has been to punt the issue to yet another costly "task force." Council members should propose solutions rather than conflict.
The city will be well served by Mike Lambert and Lorie Sinnott, and I urge voters to elect them next month.

Assembly candidates are vastly different
Editor:
The two candidates running for State Assembly are vastly different in important ways.
One, Steve Poizner, describes himself as independent when, in fact, he has made sizable contributions to Republican campaigns here and nationally. Republicans have tended to be indifferent to or against issues that benefit the environment. Poizner has no political experience. Moreover, he has backed anti-choice legislation and candidates.
Ira Ruskin, on the other hand, has been a City Council member in Redwood City and, among other pluses, created a budget reserve system for the city (showing fiscal responsibility). He has been a champion of women's rights for 40 years, and he's a trustworthy candidate who has a known and excellent track record.
