Pros and cons on propositions

Pros and cons of the 16 state ballot measures facing voters on the November ballot will be presented Wednesday, October 13, at 7 p.m. in Hansen Hall at The Sequoias, 501 Portola Road, in Portola Valley,

Kathleen Braunstein and Katherine Armstrong from the League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County will present both sides of issues ranging from government finance and casino gambling, to changing the "Three Strikes" law, and measures for funding stem cell research, mental health, children's hospitals, and some emergency services.

League speakers will explain how propositions work. They are placed on the ballot either by the state legislature or the initiative process -- leading to confusion when different propositions address the same issue -- as happens three times on this year's ballot.

People who attend may find it helpful to bring their ballots.

Parents night for future high schoolers

High school information night for seventh- and eighth-grade students and their parents will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 7, in the Sequoia High School multi-purpose room at 1201 Brewster Ave. in Redwood City. The event is for people who reside in the Sequoia Union High School District, which includes Woodside and Menlo-Atherton high schools. There will be information tables for each high school, and opportunities to talk with school personnel and collect materials.

Space available for UC extension classes

New classes being offered on Islam, mountain lions and fractals at Little House Activity Center in Menlo Park still have space available.

The courses are taught by instructors from the University of California at Santa Cruz extension program and open to students ages 55 and over.

"The Cultural Geography of the Middle East" is on Thursday afternoons beginning November 18. "The Mountain Lion in Northern California" is a one-day session on Saturday, October 30, and "Chaos, Fractals, and the World Around Us" is taught Thursday afternoons starting October 7.
