Pro-and-con sessions on ballot measures
(October 13, 2004) Baffled by all the propositions on this year's ballot? The League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County is holding a number of free community programs, where pros and cons will be presented on each of the state propositions on the November 2 ballot.
The measures range from government finance to casino gambling, changing the "Three Strikes" law, and funding stem cell research, mental health, children's hospitals, and some emergency services.
The Sequoias
A new time has been set for the program on Wednesday, October 13, at The Sequoias retirement community in Portola Valley. The program is scheduled to start at 7:45 p.m. -- 45 minutes later than originally announced due to the presidential debate that night.
Residents and visitors are invited to watch the debate at 6 p.m. on a big TV screen in Hansen Hall. After a 15-minute break, the pros and cons session will begin at 7:45 p.m. The Sequoias is located at 501 Portola Road.
Kathleen Braunstein and Katherine Armstrong from the League of Women Voters will present the opposing arguments.
St. Bede's Church
Another program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, at St. Bede's Church in Menlo Park.
There will be a question-and-answer period. St. Bede's will provide sandwiches and soft drinks beginning at 6 p.m. in the Great Hall.
There is no admission charge but a donation and reservations are requested; call 854-6555. The church is at 2650 Sand Hill Road.
