Documentary 'Oil on Ice' screened Oct. 20 Documentary 'Oil on Ice' screened Oct. 20 (October 13, 2004)

A documentary film by Dale Djerassi of Woodside and Bo Boudart of Atherton that looks at the controversial issue of drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, at Spangenberg Theatre in Palo Alto.

"Oil on Ice" uses images of vibrant wildlife and landscape, interviews with indigenous people, and scenes from the floor of Congress to argue against drilling in the 19.6 million-acre refuge, situated in the northeastern corner of Alaska.

The current administration has pushed for drilling in the area, but so far Congress has blocked it.

The film "goes beyond what not to do -- drill for oil and be dependent on oil -- but also focuses on what we should do instead," said Mr. Djerassi in an Almanac interview last spring.

The hour-long film is narrated by actor Peter Coyote. It debuted last May at the Telluride MountainFilm festival.

The October 20 screening of "Oil on Ice" will include a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers.

Admission is $5. The theater is at 780 Arastradero Road.
