Vet talk Vet talk (October 27, 2004)

Q. Can West Nile virus (WNV) infect dogs or cats?

A. Rarely. Infection in dogs and cats is rare and unlikely to cause any noticeable symptoms. Symptoms consist of a slight fever and lethargy. Full recovery is expected. There is no specific treatment, other than managing symptoms. Infection is from mosquitoes, not pet-to-pet or pet-to-person. K9 Advantix, which repels mosquitoes, may be beneficial for dogs. For more information on WNV visit: www.smhealth.org/fightthebite. Dr. Eric Griesshaber, a veterinarian and owner of Portola Valley Veterinary Clinic (portolavalleyvet.com), answers readers questions.
