Election 2004: In county school board race, incumbents and a newcomer win
(November 10, 2004) Voters re-elected two incumbents and a retired school administrator to four-year terms on the San Mateo County Board of Education. The seven-member board sets policies for the county office of education and oversees its $86 million budget.
Incumbent Ted Lempert, a former state Assemblyman, received 113,957 votes, out distancing challenger John J. "Jack" Hickey of Redwood City, a perennial Libertarian candidate for office, who received 49,015 votes. Mr. Lempert represents Trustee Area 6, encompassing Belmont-Redwood Shores, Redwood City and San Carlos elementary school districts.
Memo P. Morantes of Menlo Park, a businessman and community activist, won his re-election bid to represent Trustee Area 7 that includes Las Lomitas, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, Ravenswood and Woodside elementary districts. The unofficial tally shows: Mr. Morantes, 93,564; challenger Noria Zasslow of Menlo Park, a translator, 50,471.
Joining the board will be John Belforte, retired school administrator, who received 84,937 votes, to represent Trustee Area 4 that covers the large San Mateo-Foster City District. Runners-up: Anthony "Fel" Amistad, 29,956; Sammy Goldberg, 28,139; and Fernando Castro, 13,205.
