Powerhouse Woodside faces surging M-A in classic rivalry Powerhouse Woodside faces surging M-A in classic rivalry (November 10, 2004)

Traditional football rivals Woodside and Menlo-Atherton high schools face each other in a much-anticipated game at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13, at M-A.

Woodside sewed up the Peninsula Athletic League's Ocean Division title on Friday with a convincing 48-29 drubbing of second-place Half Moon Bay. With a perfect record (9-0 overall, 7-0 in division play), Woodside is the favorite in the M-A contest.

Led by quarterback Julian Edelman and running back Tryreece Jacks, Woodside has beaten Ocean division teams by a combined score of 300-89. On Friday, Edelman scored twice in the second half on runs of 50 and 41 yards. Jacks scored three touchdowns Friday for a total of 24 this season.

Meanwhile, M-A, led by senior quarterback Clark Hagman has won four straight after a tough start when it lost games by close scores.

On Friday, in a PAL Bay Division match-up, M-A topped Capuchino 16-10. The Bears now have a 5-4 record overall, and 4-3 in division play.

The team "has been competitive in every game," said Gregg Patner, who is in his second year as M-A's head coach.

In addition to Hagman, wide receiver David Vallarino is a leader on offense. Among defensive standouts are Saluni Saafi, linebacker Etika Sakalia, and defensive backs Michael Jorgenson and David Kalin.
