Around Town: Real-life link to local history
(November 10, 2004) The Sunday, November 21, annual meeting of the Menlo Park Historical Association is scheduled to include something special: a real-life link to local history.
Carlos Lopez, the new president of Menlo College, will speak about the Atherton family, a topic with which he's quite familiar. He's a descendant of Faxon Atherton, who in the 1860s bought about 600 acres in what is now the town of Atherton. Elena Edwards, a granddaughter of Faxon Atherton, was Mr. Lopez's grandmother.
Mr. Lopez has lived in Menlo Park for nearly 50 years.
The meeting is open to the public, say volunteers at the historical association, who are working to attract new members. It will run from 2 to 4 p.m. in the group's room downstairs in the Menlo Park Library, at 800 Alma St. Light refreshments will be served.
For more information, call the historical association at 330-2522.
Thanksgiving feast
The jZcool Eatery is selling raffle tickets at $5 each for an organic Thanksgiving dinner for eight to be prepared by the restaurant and delivered to the winner's home (within 20 miles of the Menlo Park restaurant). Proceeds will go to the Shelter Network, which operates six programs that provide shelter, food, child care and counseling to the homeless.
The winning ticket will be drawn during a party on Friday, November 12, from 5 to 6 p.m. at jZcool Eatery, 827 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be served. For more information, call 325-3665.
