Election 2004: High schools win in bond measure passage
(November 10, 2004) All went well on election day with the effort to solicit another $70 million in school construction money from property owners in the Sequoia Union High School District.
Measure H -- which needed the approval of only 55 percent of voters -- walked away with nearly 69 percent of the vote on November 2, exceeding the usual two-thirds threshold required for fiscal measures.
The measure will extend for 10 years the tax rate -- about $24 a year for every $100,000 in assessed value -- that property owners now pay on two earlier construction bonds. The rate will begin to drop in 2014, district financial advisers have said.
Included in the spending plans are $6 million for Woodside High to upgrade classrooms, and $8 million for Menlo-Atherton, part of which could fund a performing arts center. The city of Menlo Park may share in the funding and in the center's use.
About $9 million is meant for charter school buildings, including $6 million for East Palo Alto High School and $3 million for Summit Preparatory High School in Redwood City.
The district plans to spend $9 million on rebuilding or remodeling the district's adult school.
