Community notebook: Talk on new directions for Episcopal Church
(November 10, 2004) Changes in the Episcopal Church will be the topic when the Rev. Dr. John Kater speaks at a dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 18, in the Great Hall of St. Bede's Church in Menlo Park.
Dr. Kater is the director of the Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley.
"It's clear we're not the Episcopal Church of our grandmothers and grandfathers," says St. Bede's rector Katherine Lehman. "Now is a good time to pause and consider how we've changed and how much we need to change in new directions in the 21st century."
Reservations are requested for the November 18 evening. Call the church office at 854-6555. Suggested donation to cover dinner is $12.
Family Creek Day in Menlo on Sunday
People of all ages who would like to have fun in a local creek, and learn about it at the same time, are invited to the second Family Creek Day on Sunday, November 14, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at El Palo Alto Park. Participants will meet at the corner of Alma Street and Palo Alto Avenue in Palo Alto.
Activities will include scavenger hunts based on different themes related to the creek. Participants -- kids and adults alike -- will be looking for plants, rocks or geologic features, shapes in the creek channel, or maybe wildlife. The event is sponsored by the San Francisquito Creek Watershed Council

Lanes give $3.5 million to Stanford University
Atherton resident Melvin B. and Joan F. Lane have contributed $3.5 million -- matched by $2 million from the Hewlett Challenge -- to establish a Stanford professorship in interdisciplinary environmental studies and to appoint a senior fellow in the Stanford Institute for the Environment.
The Lanes are longtime Stanford supporters.
The Stanford institute was established in April as a hub for environmental work at the university. The institute conducts research, education and outreach in five areas: water, oceans, energy and climate systems, health and the environment, and biodiversity and ecosystems.
