Educator Shanterra McBride of the nonprofit Empower Program, who spoke to Portola Valley parents and teachers last November about ending a big problem at most schools -- bullying, harassment and cliques -- will return Tuesday, January 4, for follow-up activities at Corte Madera School.

Her visit represents a joint commitment by the Portola Valley School District and the PTA to eliminate mean and bullying behavior from school campuses, said Corte Madera Principal Joel Willen.

The Washington, D.C.-based Empower Program provides information about skills children can use to understand and navigate challenges they face, such as bullying.

Ms. McBride's program in November was well-received by students, teachers and parents, said Mr. Willen.

The January 4 presentations for parents are from 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. in the multi-use room and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Room 605 at Corte Madera School, 4575 Alpine Road in Portola Valley. Parents of children at Ormondale School also are invited to participate.

Ms. McBride plans to provide more information and strategies to teachers and student groups, and to meet with each fourth-grade class to help lay groundwork for positive student interactions.

The school district is focusing on "character education" as one component of its five-year logistical plan, with emphasis on three core character traits -- respect, responsibility and service. A committee of students, teachers, administration and parents developed a set of character education goals to guide the district in this venture.
