LA filmmakers to assist students in movie-making LA filmmakers to assist students in movie-making (December 29, 2004)

A rare opportunity for an inside look at the art of making a movie is awaiting 28 students from Summit Preparatory High School in Redwood City, and they won't even have to leave the county.

In a series of workshops to be held over five days in January at the Riekes Center for Human Enhancement, Los Angeles-based filmmakers Rahman Jamaal -- who has shown his work at the Sundance Film Festival -- Dan Engelhardt and Brad Leong will talk about filmmaking, said a Riekes Center spokeswoman.

For the entire month of January, the filmmakers will shepherd the Summit Prep students as they make their own short films, the spokeswoman said. While much of the work will be done with digital cameras, the kids will have a chance to shoot on Kodak film stock using a Panavision Panaflex-16 camera, an expensive professional camera.

Mr. Engelhardt is a 2004 graduate of Menlo-Atherton High School; Mr. Leong is a recent graduate of Palo Alto High School. The two formed Anchange Productions as sophomores and ran the Riekes Center's video department. Mr. Jamaal co-founded the center's Academy of Hip Hop.

The workshops will run from Monday, January 3, through Friday, January 7. For more information on the Riekes Center student filmmaking workshop, call Jansett Belovodia at 298-3404.
