Edwin A. Johnson
Coffee importer
Edwin Anthony Johnson Jr., who lived in Woodside and
Atherton for many years, died January 1 in Carmel following complications
from surgery. He was 84.
Mr. Johnson was born in Hollywood and moved with his family to
Hillsborough as a youngster. He attended Burlingame High School, where
he met his future wife, Asta Beckstrom. They were married in 1943.
Mr. Johnson graduated from Stanford University and served in the
South Pacific as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corp during World
War II.
After the war, Mr. Johnson ran E.A. Johnson Co., the family coffee-
import business founded by his grandfather. He served one term as president
of the Pacific Coast Coffee Association.
When living in Woodside, Mr. Johnson regularly attended the
Woodside Town Council meetings and helped to organize the Woodside
clean-up committee. The Johnsons moved to Carmel from Atherton three
years ago.
A member of the Menlo Country Club, he was a golfer in his younger
years, enjoyed photography and was a champion domino player. He liked to
spend time at the family cabin in the Sierra, say family members.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 61 years, Asta; three children,
Heidi Johnson of San Mateo, Peter Johnson of Belvedere, and Kirk Johnson
of Portland; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
A private family service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Portola
Valley. The family prefers memorials be made to the ALS Research Foundation,
2351 Clay St., #416, San Francisco, CA 94115.
