Skyline history buff and financial adviser Ken Fisher will give a slideshow about early logging of San Mateo County's giant redwoods Saturday, January 22, at 2 p.m. at San Mateo County History Museum in the old courthouse, 777 Hamilton St. in Redwood City.

Mr. Fisher, a forester-turned-financier, grew up in San Mateo County. He has excavated more than 30 of the county's old lumber mills, and amassed a huge collection of artifacts, books and pictures of the wild old days when lumber was king in the county's hills and forests.

World Affairs Council: terrorism in Russia

"Terrorism in Russia and Vladimir Putin's Response" will be the subject of a World Affairs Council program on Wednesday, January 26, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Stanford University's Bechtel International Center.

Gail Lapidus, senior fellow at the Institute for International Studies, will discuss the decade-old war in Chechnya, its possible connection to more recent terrorist strikes, and Russia's response.

The program will be preceded by a reception at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for members, $8 for non-members, and free to students with valid ID.
TheatreWorks celebrates 35 years

TheatreWorks will present a musical retrospective, "One Night Only," with playwright Wendy Wasserstein as host on Monday, January 31.

Ms. Wasserstein, author of "The Sisters Rosensweig" and "The Heidi Chronicles," is honorary chairman of the event, which will include a black-tie dinner followed by a stage show featuring Broadway performers showcasing new works.

The 5:30 p.m. cocktail reception and dinner, catered by McCall Associates, will take place in the lobby of the Fenwick & West law firm at 801 California St. in Mountain View.

The "One Night Only" concert will take place at 8 p.m. January 31 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts at 500 Castro St. in Mountain View. The concert will be followed by a champagne reception with the composers and guest artists.

Talk on saving African children

The Rev. Tracy Longacre will discuss how empowering women holds a key to saving Africa's children from the AIDS epidemic in her talk on Thursday, January 20, at St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Menlo Park. The "Breaking Bread at Bede's" program starts at 6:30 p.m. and includes dinner. Suggested donation is $12.

The Rev. Longacre has just returned from Ethiopia and Uganda, where she visited several "Save the Children Projects" with the Women's Empowerment Delegation.

Promoting prosperity is topic of forum

"Protecting and Promoting Prosperity on the Peninsula" will be the focus of a forum Wednesday, January 19, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Oracle Corp. Conference Center in Redwood Shores.

Keynote speaker Peter Luchetti, CEO of GFP Advisors, will talk about "Peninsula Incorporates -- Promoting our Niche" at the program, sponsored by the business organization, Samceda, and the Peninsula Policy Partnership.

Breakout sessions will focus on financing local government, water, San Francisco International Airport, and opportunities for biotechnology and the convention and tourism business.
