Menlo police officer may become San Carlos chief
(January 26, 2005) Cmdr. Greg Rothaus of the Menlo Park Police Department may be returning to his roots.
He's been in negotiations with San Carlos city officials to become police chief there, the city where he lives and got his start in 1985 as an officer.
Cmdr. Rothaus said he expected discussions to be complete early this week.
"I'm the only candidate, as far as I know," he told the Almanac.
San Carlos Police Chief Jim Granucci retired last year.
Cmdr. Rothaus worked in San Carlos until 1996, rising to the rank of sergeant and working with the San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force. He worked for the Hercules Police Department as a commander, and then joined the Menlo Park force as a commander the following year.
Currently in charge of the Menlo Park department's patrol officers, Cmdr. Rothaus previously headed the investigations division. In 2002, he served as interim chief for two months after Scott Vermeer left to head Mountain View's police department.
