Woodside High student

With its 11th straight win, the Woodside High boys basketball team has moved into a first-place tie with Burlingame in the PAL South Division.

Burlingame forfeited its January 26 game against Carlmont due to an academically ineligible player.

The Menlo-Atherton boys team won two and lost one last week and tied for fourth place with Aragon. With leading scorer and rebounder Dan Trautman out with an ankle injury, M-A's chances for the playoffs depend on the outcome of its February 9 game at Aragon. The top four teams in the division enter the playoffs.

Woodside's and Menlo-Atherton's girls teams will not go to the playoffs, as they are three and four games, respectively, behind fourth-place Burlingame, with only two games to go.
Woodside boys

Woodside won three times last week, bringing its record to 20-5 (11-1 in league play).

Woodside beat Aragon 70-56 at home February 1, behind 19 points and 11 rebounds from Dominic Cruz-Duncan. James Sandoval scored 17 and Aaron Mayfield 13 for the Wildcats, who seized control with a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats crushed Capuchino at home 62-39 on February 2. Cruz-Duncan had another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while J.R. Valdez added 14 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.

Woodside trounced district rival Sequoia, 69-48, at home February 4. Juston Smith had 18 points and six rebounds for Woodside, which also got contributions from Cruz-Duncan (13 points), and Eric Berman (10 points, 4 assists).

This week's games: February 9 vs. San Mateo at 3:15 p.m.; February 11 at Menlo-Atherton at 7:45 p.m.
Woodside girls

Woodside won one and lost two last week to bring its record to 15-11 (5-7) and keep them in sixth place. On February 1, Woodside lost to Aragon on the road, 58-48. Jasmine Lewis led all scorers with 21 points. On February 2, the team routed Capuchino, 54-35, away from home. Maria Haga led a balanced Woodside attack with 12 points.

On February 4, the Wildcats lost to Sequoia at home, 46-38. Lewis had 16 points and Arianne Smith 8 to pace Woodside, which couldn't close out a tight game against its district rival. This week's games: February 9 at San Mateo at 3:15 p.m.; February 11 at Menlo-Atherton at 6:15 p.m.
M-A boys

M-A raised its record to 12-10 (7-5). On February 1, M-A lost at Burlingame, 78-52. The Bears were led by Carson Finkle, Eric Peterson and Chris Dallmar, who each scored 12 points. On February 2, the squad regrouped and beat Mills, 58-38 at home. Finkle scored 17 points and Kevin Disibo had 11.

On February 4, the team beat Carlmont at home, 50-42. Finkle led with 21 points for M-A, which was playing without Trautman for the fifth game. This week's games: February 9 at Aragon at 3:15 p.m.; February 11 vs. Woodside at 7:45 p.m.
Menlo-Atherton girls

The team won one and lost two last week to bring its record to 12-12 (4-8) and seventh place in the division. On February 1, M-A lost to Burlingame at home, 68-51. The Bears, who got a double-double from Sigourney Jellins (14 points, 12 rebounds), were overwhelmed by Burlingame's steady defense and balanced scoring.

On February 2, the team got run over by Mills, 70-26, on the road. Jellins, Karley Marty, and Ann Wolters each scored 6 points. On February 4, M-A routed Carlmont at home, 53-35. Marty led the team with 14 points, and Brittany Wilson added 11. This week's games: February 9 vs. Aragon at 4:45 p.m.; February 11 vs. Woodside at 6:15 p.m.
