Kids raise funds for tsunami victims

Fifth-graders from Corte Madera School recently put their community service learning into action to help tsunami victims overseas.

They organized a bake sale at John's Market in Portola Valley, and in two hours, raised $275 plus a matching donation of $100.

The funds will be given to the American Red Cross through SalesForce.com, which matches donations, said Kelly Diedrich, mother of one of the young organizers. The final total donation is $750.

The organizers are fifth-graders Jessica Diedrich, Kimberly Wong, Hannah Totte, Katie Lannin, Sam Trinkaus, and Amy and Catherine Rosch; and third-grader Kristine Diedrich.
Left Bank fundraiser for school foundation

Left Bank brasserie in Menlo Park is teaming up with the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation (MPAEF) for a community fundraiser.

The foundation is selling gift certificates to the Menlo Park Left Bank for $45 that can be redeemed at the restaurant for $50. Gift certificates will be for sale only through the foundation Web site, mpaef.org. The sale will continue until June and certificates may be redeemed until September.
Pianist Kevin Chen in concert

Pianist Kevin Chen, a high school senior who has already won a series of prizes in competitions, will be the soloist for the Young Artist Recital, sponsored by the Music Teachers' Association of California, San Mateo Branch.

The concert is Sunday, February 20, at 2:30 p.m., in the Wind Room at Foster City Community Center, 1000 Hillsdale Blvd. at Shell in Foster City. There's no admission fee. Donations are accepted.

Kevin will play selections by Bach, Prokofiev, Beethoven and Liszt. He has earned prizes in competitions since 1998, including the San Francisco Bartok Festival, San Francisco Chopin Competition for Young Pianists and the Stanford Young Artist Festival.
