French broom counteroffensive in Portola Valley French broom counteroffensive in Portola Valley (March 02, 2005)

The Portola Valley community is seeking volunteer soldiers for its annual morning assault on French broom, the invasive plant that has infested roadsides along Alpine and Portola roads.

Accoutrements of destruction -- weed wrenches -- will be provided, along with refreshments and gloves.

Volunteers are asked to meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Town Center at 765 Portola Road. The annual team effort will end at noon, but the town encourages homeowners to learn to recognize the plant and to remove it whenever found on their property.

For more information, call Marilyn Walter at 851-8181.
