Q. How long have you been writing Ask the Officer, and how did it originate? A. The Almanac checked back issues and the earliest one they could find was dated April 24, 1996. I had the idea bouncing around in my head for a few years and went to Richard Hine, managing editor of the Almanac, to ask if he would be interested. He was. It should be noted that not all the responses you read are mine. I have relied on my fellow officers to assist me in answering questions, and I've passed on some personal insights from fellow officers and supervisors as well, all in an effort to improve the relationship between officer and citizen.
