Short Takes Short Takes (March 09, 2005)

The Almanac brings people together

A Woodside reader says she was inspired to plan a family reunion after reading a recent Almanac article by Kate Daly about a reunion of female first cousins. This month, the reader plans to host her four sisters -- all in their 50s and 60s -- for their first sisters-only get-together.

Don't rabbit breeds just have the cutest names?

Easter is a tricky time for the Peninsula Humane Society and its hoppy denizens. On the one hand, shelter officials know that most people who think it would be cute to put a real live bunny in their child's Easter basket aren't prepared for the reality of rabbit care.

Rabbits are delicate, needy companions that aren't well-suited to being a small child's pet, says spokesman Scott Delucchi.

On the other hand, the Humane Society always has a healthy supply of adoptable bunnies looking for happy homes, and since everyone knows that rabbits and Easter go together, why buy a bunny when you can adopt one?

The end result is that PHS would like anyone who is really ready to bring a bunny home to stop by and check out the dozen rabbits currently available for adoption at the shelter. Just like people, they come in a variety of sizes, colors and types.

For bunny-care basics, check out the House Rabbit Society's Web page, www.rabbit.org. For adoptions, call PHS at 340-7022, ext. 700, or online at www.phs-spca.org.
