Poizner withdraws from PUC nomination

Former state Assembly candidate Steve Poizner has withdrawn his name from nomination to the California Public Utilities Commission, and confirmed he will run for state insurance commissioner in 2006.

A Los Gatos Republican, Mr. Poizner ran unsuccessfully for the Assembly last year against Ira Ruskin, who now represents the 21st Assembly district.

Mr. Poizner was nominated for the PUC by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, but concluded that his extensive financial holdings would have precluded him from voting on many of the matters that come before the commission.

'Raise the Roof' aims to raise the cash

A yearly campaign to garner funds for free roof repair and replacement for low-income residents and community facilities has begun, organized by the Menlo Park-based Rebuilding Together Peninsula. The group hopes to raise $80,000 this year.

About 75 rebuilding projects are planned for the National Rebuilding Day program on April 30.

"This year we are facing increased lumber costs, which raises the total cost per project by 20 percent," said organization executive director Loretta Gallegos.
