Briefs: Trees for Menlo supporters honored Briefs: Trees for Menlo supporters honored (April 13, 2005)

Fittingly, a plaque honoring those who supported an effort to plant trees along El Camino Real will be green -- green slate with silver engraving.

The plaque will be officially unveiled Saturday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m. in the Menlo Center plaza, near Kepler's Books and Cafe Borrone. It's being installed by Trees for Menlo, a nonprofit organization that has worked with Menlo Park city officials to plant 210 London Plane trees.

"We were not hoping to replicate Paris' Champs Elysees, but to shade and soften El Camino," said Trees for Menlo leader Chuck Kinney, a former City Council member.

Planted along the sidewalks and in the wider medians, the trees ideally will in time "create an arbor-like effect," he added.

The plaque will include the names of people to whom trees have been dedicated; donors of $500 or more were invited to dedicate a tree. The plaque is designed in the shape of the city's oak tree logo.

Later tree-plantings are being planned. For more information, call 323-5358 or go to www.treesformenlo.com.
New digs for League of Women Voters

They work to mobilize residents to the polls -- and now they have also gotten moving.

The League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County has relocated its office from 800 Alma St. in Menlo Park to 713 Santa Cruz Ave., Suite 9. Its phone number will remain the same, 325-5780.

An "office-warming" party is planned for Wednesday, April 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring an appetizer or beverage.

Tsunami fund grows to $62,700

A fund established two months ago by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage to benefit tsunami victims has grown to $62,700, fund officials said.

The funds came from donations from Coldwell Banker sales associates as well as a contribution from the company, officials said. The money will go to two organizations: the American Red Cross International Response Fund and Habitat for Humanity Disaster Response.
