Streetscape celebration set for the Alameda
(April 20, 2005) An Alameda Streetscape Neighborhood Celebration will be held Saturday, April 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the Alameda de las Pulgas between Ashton and Avy avenues.
After almost six years of effort by dozens of neighbors, the Menlo Park University Heights business area is now pedestrian-friendly with the addition of sidewalks, street crossings and trees, so it seemed time to celebrate, said event chairman Ken Turkowski.
The event will include special menu items served by local food merchants, including Round Table, where kids will be able to make their own pizzas.
Lulu's restaurant will provide mariachi music. Girl Scout Troop 2708 will set up a craft table for kids. Peak Performance Chiropractic will offer chair massages and spinal screening.
The Woodside Bike Shop will be doing bicycle safety checks and the Menlo Park Fire Protection District will have a fire engine parked in front of the Dutch Goose from 11 a.m. to noon. The Almanac joins other local businesses and organizations taking part in the celebration.
At noon there will be a recognition ceremony honoring primary leaders of the streetscape project including San Mateo County Supervisor Rich Gordon, Leslie Wambaugh and Bill Kirsch. The organizing committee includes: Ken Turkowski, Maggie Heilman, Barbara Kirk, and Marion Goodkind.
