Music celebrates reading, libraries this Saturday
(May 04, 2005) Local young musicians are tuning up for a day of performances at the 11th annual Kepler's-Menlo Park Library Day on Saturday, May 7, from 9 to 4 p.m.
"Celebrate the Magic of Reading" will take place in the plaza in front of Kepler's bookstore at 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Menlo Park Library and Kepler's to promote libraries and reading, says longtime volunteer organizer Tim Goode of Menlo Park.
The day begins with a performance by the combined Oak Knoll and Encinal student orchestras. Hillview middle school musicians will perform next, followed by the Menlo-Atherton Jazz and Concert bands.
Kepler's is providing free drawings for books for young readers, and SCORE is providing free face painting. Gift certificates will be raffled to raise money for participating schools. Those contributing certificates include Carpaccio's, Left Bank, Round Table Pizza, Cook's Seafood, Cafe Borrone, the Oasis and the Dutch Goose.
The event also helps launch Kepler's "It's for the Kids" program, through which the bookstore donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of children's books sold during the month of May to support summer reading programs for kids at both the Belle Haven joint school/city library and the Menlo Park Library.
