Around Town: World traveler presents Elderhostel program
(May 04, 2005) Judith Fernandez of Menlo Park will speak about her experiences with Elderhostel, a travel and education program for people 55 and older, on Saturday, May 7, at the Menlo Park Library.
The talk, "Happy Trails: Travel with Elderhostel," is set for 11 a.m., and is free.
Ms. Fernandez and her husband, Bill, have traveled through Elderhostel for a number of years, and she is now a program "ambassador" -- a volunteer who speaks to the public about what Elderhostel offers.
A nonprofit group, Elderhostel collaborates with about 2,000 educational and cultural institutions all over the world.
It offers programs ranging from trips with a focus on the sights, history, art, cuisine and culture of certain countries or regions; to theme-based trips, such as painting on Nantucket, learning about American music -- from spirituals to jazz -- on a Mississippi paddleboat, or studying literature in London.
The library is at 800 Alma St. Free van service for Menlo Park seniors and people with disabilities is available. For more information or to schedule transportation, call 330-2512.
Chamber fetes Quatro de Mayo
Taking the fashionably early approach, the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce is holding a Quatro de Mayo mixer on Wednesday, May 4.
The event, which allows for copious networking among business people, runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Peak Performance Chiropractic at 2100 Gordon Ave. in West Menlo Park. For more information, call 325-2818.
Forum gives answers on Alzheimer's
Those worried about a family member with memory problems may get some answers at a forum scheduled for Saturday, May 14, at the Peninsula Volunteers Rosener House in Menlo Park.
The event will provide an overview of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, as well as information about community resources. Topics will include the latest advances in research.
Those scheduled to speak are: John Timbs, a family care specialist with the Alzheimer's Association Northern California & Northern Nevada; Kellie A. Takagi, director of education at the Stanford/VA Alzheimer's Research of California; and John Khajit, a family consultant with the Family Caregiver Alliance.
The event begins with registration and refreshments at 9 a.m. and then runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Rosener House is located at 500 Arbor Road, at the corner of Middle Avenue. For more information, call 322-0126.
Art with class
Student art -- created as class projects by students at Laurel, Encinal and Oak Knoll schools in the Menlo Park City School District -- will be on display through Friday, May 7, in each school's library during school hours.
Parents and community members are invited to see the exhibit and place a silent bid on the artwork. Proceeds go to the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation, which stages it's dinner, dance and auction Saturday.
Bids for the art and the hundreds of items listed in the foundation's auction catalog may be made online at mpaef.org.
Woodside Day at ... SBC Park
The name and final destination may have changed over the years, but many Woodsiders are once again planning to participate in the annual event of going together to cheer on the San Francisco Giants at a home game.
What started out as Woodside Day at the Stick, and evolved into Woodside Day at 3Com Park, then moved to Pacbell Park, is now Woodside Day at SBC Park on Sunday, May 29.
The Woodside Recreation Committee has reserved bleacher seats for the 1:05 p.m. baseball game against the San Diego Padres. The seats are in Section 140 on the left field side, and are available for $22 each.
To buy tickets, pick up a flier at Woodside Elementary School or download a form at woodsiderec.com. For more information, call Chuck Martin at 851-1482.
