Absentee ballots mailed
(May 18, 2005)to Atherton voters
Absentee ballots for Atherton's June 7 special election were mailed to all residents in the town May 9 and applications to vote by mail will continue to be accepted through Tuesday, May 31, according to San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum.
The deadline to register to vote in the election is May 23.
In the election, voters will be asked to renew a parcel tax measure that's identical to the one currently in place, with one exception -- it has a five-year, rather than a four-year, term.
Two-thirds of the voters must approve the measure for it to pass.
A four-year tax renewal measure was rejected by voters in November. The current parcel tax is set to expire June 30.
The majority of Atherton homeowners pay a parcel tax of $750 annually. Tax revenues bring in about $1.8 million a year, which is divided between capital improvement projects, such as road repairs, and town services, such as the Atherton Police Department.
