Elizabeth Ann Fries

Professor of psychology

Elizabeth Ann "Liz" Fries, who grew up in Menlo Park and Portola Valley, died May 20 of complications following treatment for breast cancer. She was 42.

Services will be held Saturday, June 4, on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, where Ms. Fries was an associate professor of psychology.

Ms. Fries attended Ladera School and La Entrada Middle School, and graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School in 1981. At M-A, she was a member of the drill team and a cheerleader. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a bachelor of science degree, and earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Washington.

In 1991 she married Viktor Ernest Bovbjerg. The couple moved to Richmond in 1994 to pursue their careers in medical research. In 2003, they moved to Goochland County, Virginia.

Ms. Fries was program leader of the cancer control program at the Massey Cancer Center of Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research was concentrated in tobacco and dietary change for cancer prevention.

She was an avid horseman, who loved the outdoors, say family members.

Ms. Fries is survived by her husband, Viktor Bovbjerg; two daughters, Kirsten, 6, and Hannah, 3, all of Maidens, Virginia; her parents, Dr. James and Sarah Fries of Woodside; and her brother, Greg Fries of Boulder.

Virginia Commonwealth University has established the Elizabeth A. Fries Memorial Scholarship Fund in her memory to be used for graduate students in psychology pursuing cancer control research. Contributions may be sent to: Elizabeth A. Fries Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 842018, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA 23284.

Lorna Loram

Former Menlo Park resident

Lorna Anne Loram, who lived in several cities on the Peninsula, including Menlo Park, died of complications from diabetes May 16 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was 63.

Ms. Loram was born in Placerville and spent much of her childhood in Berkeley and Orinda. She attended Linfield College in Oregon, but left school to marry Bill Wallace in 1960. They were divorced in 1985.

During the years Ms. Loram lived on the Peninsula she worked in a variety of administrative and retail positions. At one time, she was a member of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church and a docent at Filoli Center in Woodside.

In 2003 she decided to finish her college degree and enrolled at Salem College in Winston-Salem, where she majored in communications. She was an active member of the Grace Bible Church in Winston-Salem. In the last few months of her life, she invited each of the women in her church, one by one, to tea in her studio apartment, helping them understand the importance of hospitality in Christian fellowship, say family members.

She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Stockwell of Newhall, California, Sarah Wallace of Santa Clarita, and Sharon Wallace of Scotts Valley; two sons, David Wallace of San Jose and Peter Wallace of South Bend, Indiana; a sister, Lucy Shinozaki of Farmington Hills, Michigan; a brother, John Loram of Ashland, Oregon; and 10 grandchildren.

Services were held May 26 at the Memorial Prayer Chapel at Mount Herman Conference Center, Mount Herman, California.

Marguerite Maloney

Former Atherton resident

Marguerite Eagan Maloney of Concord, Massachusetts, died May 18 of complications from pneumonia. She was 81.

An Atherton resident from 1974 to 1981, Ms. Maloney lived in Naples, Florida, until recently moving to Concord.

A native of Philadelphia, Mrs. Maloney was a graduate of the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Overbrook, Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia School of Office Training.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Martin M. Maloney of Concord; four sons, Michael M. of Chamblee, Georgia, David A. of Sonora, John T. of San Francisco, and Thomas H. of Plymouth, Massachusetts; a daughter, Marianne E. Maloney of Concord; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles (Sandy) Maloney of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

A funeral Mass was held May 21 at Holy Family Church in Concord.

Laura Lambourne

Former Portola Valley resident

Laura McGhie Lambourne, who lived in Portola Valley from the mid-1960s to 1990, died May 19 at Manor Care Nursing and Rehab in Sunnyvale. She was 96.

Ms. Lambourne was born in Salt Lake City, one of seven children. Her father died when she was 4 and she would later join her sisters in helping to support the family, along with her mother who was a teacher.

She majored in education at the University of Utah, where she was a member of Phi Beta Phi sorority, and taught elementary school.

She married Richard Lambourne in 1933 and they lived in New York City and Salt Lake City before moving to the Peninsula. Later they returned to New York City where Mr. Lambourne was treasurer of the Ford Foundation.

Ms. Lambourne was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a past Stake Primary president. She was an accomplished artist and past president of the Palo Alto Art Club.

Ms. Lambourne is survived by three children, David of Los Altos, Kenneth of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Catherine Engel of Los Angeles; sister Louise Johnson of Puyallup, Washington; 10 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Richard Lambourne, died in 1989.

A memorial service was held May 30 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Los Altos. Arrangements were under the direction of Spangler Mortuaries.
