Graduation, then the pros, for Woodside scholar-athlete
(June 08, 2005) Jonathan Makonnen recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in American studies.
Now it's time for him to complete the rest of his dream as he heads for mini camp with the Tennessee Titans. He has signed on as a free agent.
Mr. Makonnen is a 2000 graduate of Woodside High School, where he played wide receiver and was named San Mateo County co-player of the year. He also played in the Shrine All-Star game.
After high school, he attended City College of San Francisco, playing football for two champion seasons.
In 2002 he transferred to UC Berkeley to play wide receiver for the Cal Bears under the direction of Coach Jeff Tedford. In his first year he led Cal Bear receivers with 54 catches.
Mr. Makonnen's mother, Phyllis Cooksey, is the owner of Jonathan's Fish and Chips at 840 Willow Road in Menlo Park, where Jonathan has helped out during summer vacations.
