Three counties boost Caltrain contributions

The three counties that participate in Caltrain will help shore up the budget of the troubled railroad by upping their contributions by 3 percent.
The increased contributions by the San Mateo County Transit District, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, and the San Francisco Municipal Railway will help Caltrain bridge a $13.6 million budget deficit.
On June 2, the Caltrain board of directors adopted a $76.7 million budget for fiscal year 2006, a 3 percent increase over the current year.
Directors of the three-county agency that runs the Peninsula rail service agreed last month to raise fares by 17.5 percent effective July 1, and to run more popular Baby Bullet express trains to generate additional revenue.
Starting August 1, Caltrain will increase the number of train trips each weekday from 88 to 96, including 22 Baby Bullets.
The Caltrain board hopes that the remaining budget gap will be filled by Proposition 42 funds released by the state -- if the Legislature adopts the governor's proposed budget -- and by money from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
