Kiwanis Club gives $50,000 in college scholarships
(June 29, 2005) The Kiwanis Club of Menlo Park recently granted a total of $50,000 in one-year college scholarships to 13 students who attended Menlo-Atherton High School and Menlo School -- both in Atherton -- and East Side Preparatory School in East Palo Alto.
The recipients, listed by high school, and with the name of the college they plan to attend, are:
** From M-A High: Jason Burks, U.C. Berkeley; Yesenia Calderon, U.C. Berkeley; Glen Eastman, U.C. San Diego; Ylanda Gonzalez, U.C. Berkeley; Shaleen Hinestroza, Notre Dame de Namur; Kerry Kilduff, UCLA; Samuel Pech, San Jose State; John Salem, Maui Community College; and Emma Shapiro, U.C. Santa Barbara.
** From Menlo School: Rose LeMoullac, Vassar College.
** From East Side Preparatory School: Maricruz Alvarado, Mills College; Mayra Contreras, Santa Clara University; and Anayeli Vargas, Mills College.
Counselors from schools involved in the Kiwanis scholarship program submit names of candidates to the Kiwanis scholarship committee, chaired by Jim Grace. The committee interviews the students and chooses the winners.
The Kiwanis Club, which has more than 80 members, meets for lunch every Tuesday at the Menlo Park Recreation Center and listens to a speaker on a current topic.
The club raises funds for scholarships from member dues and donations, plus events such as the club's annual Crab Fest, the Connoisseur's Marketplace summer street festival in Menlo Park, and a Christmas tree lot.
