Four locals scouts gain Eagle Scout rank Four locals scouts gain Eagle Scout rank (July 06, 2005)

Four members of Boy Scout Troop 222 in Menlo Park recently attained the Eagle Scout rank and were recognized at an Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony in Menlo Park on June 18, according to the troop's scoutmaster, John Kozlowski.

The Eagle Scout rank requires the acquisition of at least 21 merit badges and the completion of an Eagle Scout project. The new Eagle Scouts -- Jack Reis, Torr Hage, Kyle Mulroe and Matthew Gregory -- are all recent graduates of Menlo-Atherton High School.

Troop 222 provided the following information about the scouts.
Jack Reis

In his Eagle Scout project, Jack of Menlo Park coordinated a blood drive for one of his troop's scouts who needed transfusions during his treatment for acute leukemia.

Since joining Cub Scout Pack 222 as a first grader, Jack has earned more than 41 merit badges. He has participated in more than 300 hours of community service activities, gone on wilderness experiences and taken on scouting leadership roles such as patrol leader to guide.

Jack, whose older brother Nick received his Eagle Scout rank from Troop 222 in 2002, received the National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist Award -- an honor given to fewer than 1 percent of high school seniors nationwide.

He has played the piano for more than 10 years and attained the piano Level V certificate of merit from the California Music Teachers Association.

He will attend the University of California at San Diego this fall, where he plans to pursue a bioengineering premedical major.
Torr Hage

Torr of Woodside learned structural skills in his Eagle Scout project as he helped rebuild various tables in Menlo Park's Flood Park. He also helped to make some of the tables wheelchair accessible.

Torr joined the Cub Scouts in 1995 and Troop 222 in 1998, rising to such leadership positions as troop guide and troop quartermaster. He has taken part in various wilderness adventure programs.

Torr participated in the Menlo-Atherton High School aquatics program as a member of both the water polo team and the varsity swim team. He plans to attend the University of California, Santa Cruz, this fall as a neuroscience major.
Kyle Mulroe

Kyle, a resident of Menlo Park, worked with the San Mateo Mosquito Abatement District for his Eagle Scout project to survey Menlo Park residents about their knowledge of the West Nile virus.

He joined Cub Scout Pack 222 in elementary school and graduated to Boy Scout Troop 222 in 1999. He has served as a troop scribe, patrol guide and senior patrol leader.

Kyle was a member of Menlo-Atherton High School's Ultimate Frisbee Club, Thespians Society, and Lunatic Players improvisation club.

Since his junior year, he has tutored kindergarten, elementary and middle school-age children at Score! Learning Center.

He plans to attend the University of California, Santa Cruz, this fall.
Matthew Gregory

For his Eagle Scout project, Matthew of Woodside helped abate trail erosion by constructing a retaining wall in Memorial Park, a wilderness area in Loma Mar.

Since joining Troop 222 in 1998, he has earned 34 merit badges, participated in the "mile swim," and received two 50-Mile Trek awards.

He has served in various leadership positions, including instructor and senior patrol leader. Matthew was the first member of his troop to be re-elected as senior patrol leader.

Matthew played water polo, soccer and varsity lacrosse during high school. He also ran cross country and won the Junior Varsity Pacific Athletic League Cross-Country meet in 2004.

He consistently made the Menlo-Atherton High School Honor Roll, and participated in Poetry Slam and the Lunatic Players improvisation club. He plans to attend the University of California, Santa Cruz, this fall.
