Donation will help rebuild park entrance
The main entrance to Wunderlich Park -- closed when a bridge was damaged in a New Year's Day storm in 2004 -- may be replaced by this October, thanks in part to donations from park supporters.
The Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks have donated $18,250 toward the $45,250 cost of rebuilding the bridge; and the San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Foundation has contributed $7,000 toward engineering plans and permits.
The remaining $20,000 will come from the Huddart Park Trust Fund, according to Environmental Services Director Marcia Raines.
The new bridge will make it much easier for the horses and trailers that now have to wind through the alternate entrance to get to the Folger Stables. The original entrance off Woodside Road will also be an improvement for the public.
Boys raise $1,900 to fight muscular dystrophy
Atherton 10-year-olds Steffan Salas and his twin brother, Julian, both third-graders at Las Lomitas Elementary School in Menlo Park, recently raised $1,900 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Steffan grew interested in the MDA because his friend, 10-year-old Jack Wise, lives with mitochondrial myopathy, according to Heather Ripley, program coordinator at the MDA in San Jose.
Steffan researched muscular dystrophy, presented the information to 110 classmates, and convinced them to carry out a fundraiser that he and Julian planned. They asked neighbors, family members and friends to sponsor them in a basketball-shooting event that they organized.
The money will be used to send kids with muscular dystrophy to summer camp in August and to fund further MDA research, Ms. Ripley said.
