Legion baseball: Menlo Park scores 22 times
(July 13, 2005) Menlo Park's American Legion "B" team exploded for a season-high 22 runs on 22 hits in the second game of a doubleheader July 9 as the Bears split with San Mateo, dropping the first game, 7-6, and winning the second, 22-11, at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo.
The Bears led 4-0 through the first four innings of Game 1 behind the three-hit pitching of lefthander Corey Zirbes. But in the fifth, San Mateo erupted for seven runs on six hits off Zirbes and reliever Jon Abramson to take a 7-4 lead.
In the second game, Menlo Park scored in every inning but the fifth. Brian Roby and Stephen Hicks each scored four times, and Skylar Brewer and Joe Cain scored three times.
Menlo Park, which has won seven of its last eight games, improved its second-place league record to 10-5. San Mateo is now 10-2 and remains in first place in the league.
