New hours, programs for teens at Boys & Girls Club New hours, programs for teens at Boys & Girls Club (July 27, 2005)

Reports by teens of increased street violence, which causes many of them to avoid going outside in their own neighborhoods, is one factor driving the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula to extend hours and create new teen programs, says Chris Canter, director of development with the organization.

The new hours at the clubs in Menlo Park, East Palo Alto and Redwood City -- effective as of July 1 -- are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. After 6 p.m. on all of these days, only teens will be allowed at the club.

Previously, the clubs did not stay open past 6 p.m., and were not open on Saturdays, Mr. Canter says.

In addition, the clubs have created two new activities for teens, in response to their suggestions.

Smart Moves, for 13 to 15-year olds, looks to boost self confidence and provide education on life skills and dealing with problems involving drugs, alcohol and peer-pressure.

Keystone Club gives 14- to 18-year-olds opportunities to elect peer leaders and design programs in community service, character development, and career exploration.

The clubs also plan to hold more dances and concerts, and offer classes in financial literacy.

Mr. Canter hopes that more teen-only programs, as well as later club hours, will appeal to teens who avoid the organization due to its name: Teens do not like to see themselves as "boys and girls," he says.
