It was the first day of practice in the new season for the Menlo-Atherton Vikings Pop Warner football contenders -- and the first practice ever for the new "Tiny Mites" division for 6- and 7-year-olds, coached by Menlo Park's Bill Tarr.

Kids from East Palo Alto through Woodside, from age 6 through 15, and weighing up to 150 pounds are competing in five age and weight categories.

The season opens Sunday, August 28, with the annual Pop Warner Jamboree at Menlo-Atherton High School. Vikings president Bob Williams said further information may be obtained at 562-1950 or on the Web site, mapopwarner.com.
