Homemade eye-catching posters are springing up on bulletin boards all over the Peninsula to publicize the Woodside Pony Club's annual hunter jumper horse show in Woodside on Sunday, September 11.

Every summer club members, local girls ranging in ages from 7 to 17, get together to make the colorful posters, then fan out to distribute them so that everybody knows about the WPC Classic, the club's major fundraiser.

More than 100 English riders usually compete in the 30 classes at the event, put on in two arenas at the Horse Park at Woodside, formerly known as CTETA. The facility is located on Sand Hill Road a half mile west of Interstate 280.

"We have a longstanding history of partnership with CTETA, putting on this horse show for all levels of riders from lead line to open jumping over 3 foot 3 inch fences," says show secretary Catherine Swent.

"This is a great event for people who are new to the show area, or people getting back into it; in the past we've had riders from ages 4 to 72 years old," she adds.

Classes are divided into four divisions: beginning, low, short stirrup (for children 11 and under), and long stirrup for all ages.

High point awards are given to the division leaders. Ribbons, and prizes will be handed out down to eighth place in all classes except for the lead line class where all participants, English and Western riders 6 and under, are awarded blue ribbons.

The show starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs all day. The warm-up areas will open at 7:30 a.m. Food service will be available throughout the show.

Register by September 4 and the entry fee is $15 per class. After that, the fee will be $20 per class.

Entry forms are posted at many riding stables and businesses in the area. Forms can also be downloaded from WoodsidePonyClub.org.

Formed more than 27 years ago, the Woodside Pony Club is affiliated with the U.S. Pony Club, a nonprofit national organization open to riders under 21 with their own horses and ponies.

Instructors teach English riding and horse management skills year-round at the John Kiely Equestrian Center, 3375 Tripp Road in Woodside.
