Robberies, gunfire at Atherton party Robberies, gunfire at Atherton party (August 10, 2005)

A loud party held Friday, July 29, at a residence in the 100 block of Glenwood Avenue in Atherton became a scene of robbery and gunfire, police said.

At the party, racial tensions among some of the young people in attendance apparently developed into an altercation that led one group of people to go outside late in the evening and vandalize vehicles believed to belong to another group, said Sgt. Chris Madsen of the Atherton Police Department.

At one point, someone -- perhaps someone whose vehicle had been vandalized -- removed a gun from a vehicle and fired one round into a vehicle occupied by the group doing the vandalizing, police said.

Neighbors called 911 to alert police. No one was injured, witnesses told police, but several purses and wallets were reported missing.

Police are investigating and are looking for suspects on both sides of this altercation, said Sgt. Madsen.
