Restaurants must post inspection results Restaurants must post inspection results (August 17, 2005)

Beginning in mid-September, all restaurants, markets and food establishments in San Mateo County must post their latest inspection report in a place where the public can see it.

In response to a critical report from the Grand Jury in 2004, the Board of Supervisors on August 9 adopted an ordinance tightening regulations on establishments handling food.

Besides requiring posting of routine annual inspections, the new ordinance allows the county to require that all people handling food at a particular establishment receive training in food sanitation. At present one person at a restaurant or market must have such training, said Environmental Health Director Dean Peterson.

The county routinely monitors some 3,700 restaurants, markets, school cafeterias, and other places that handle or serve food. Each receives an annual inspection, and follow-up inspections if problems are found.
