Election 2005: Fire board race attracts nine candidates Election 2005: Fire board race attracts nine candidates (August 24, 2005)

Voters will choose from a roster of nine candidates who are competing for three seats on the Menlo Park Fire Protection District board.

With incumbent Del Krause deciding not to run again, the candidate filing period was extended to August 17.

Incumbents Peter Carpenter of Atherton and Ollie Brown of Menlo Park will try to retain their seats, and Steve Kennedy of East Palo Alto will try to regain a spot on the board after loosing his bid for re-election in 2003. As a board member Mr. Kennedy was censured three times by his colleagues, who publicly opposed his attempt to stay on the board.

The other challengers are:

** Sarah Rankin of Menlo Park, a senior-level executive who is self-employed as a consultant.

** Terry Kent of Menlo Park, an appraiser and broker, and owner of Drexel Realty Services.

** Rex Ianson of Menlo Park, a former Menlo Park district firefighter who still serves on the national search and rescue task force as part of the regional team headquartered in Menlo Park.

** Scott Freiermuth of Menlo Park, director of sales for a software company in Sunnyvale.

** Gerry Andeen of Menlo Park, a former Menlo Park mayor and former SRI engineer.

** Jack Nelson of Menlo Park, a warehouse operations safety manager.
