Election 2005: Races are on for school board seats Election 2005: Races are on for school board seats (August 24, 2005)

Contested elections will be held November 8 in the Woodside Elementary and Sequoia Union High school districts.

With the close of the filing period August 17, four women are running for three open seats on the Woodside board: incumbent Bettina Pike, who is seeking a second term; and new candidates Ellen Ablow, Karen Werner and Elianne Frenkel-Popell.

Three candidates are running for two open seats on the Sequoia board: incumbent Gordon Lewin of Menlo Park, who is seeking his second term; incumbent Sarah D. "Sally" Stewart of Portola Valley, who has been on the Sequoia board since 1983; and a new candidate, Noria Zasslow, a resident of Menlo Park.

There are no open board seats this year on the Menlo Park City School District. The Portola Valley School District board has three open seats, but just two candidates filed -- Donna Carano and Ray Villareal -- so they will be appointed.

The filing period August 17.
