Passing boot to fight muscular dystrophy Passing boot to fight muscular dystrophy (August 24, 2005)

Motorists traveling the El Camino near Ravenswood Avenue from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, will see a peculiar sight: Local firefighters will be stationed on the street, raising a boot to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

"Our helmets won't hold as much as a boot," says Capt. Tom Neylan of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

The firefighters will ask motorists and passersby to help them "Fill the Boot" as part of the MDA's fundraising drive, which is being supported by the San Mateo County firefighters' union, Local 2400.

The volunteer boot-raisers from the Menlo Park district will be joined by a few firefighters from parts north in their effort to raise $9,000. A similar drive last month in Redwood City raised $8,350. Proceeds from all the drives support MDA services and research programs.
