Football game benefits Peninsula Bridge program
(August 31, 2005) Sometimes a grudge match can be a good thing, especially when it benefits a common cause.
On Friday, September 9, Menlo School and Sacred Heart Prep's football teams will face off to raise money for the Peninsula Bridge program.
The third annual Valparaiso Bowl, as it's called, since the two rival schools are located just down the street from each other on Valparaiso Avenue in Atherton, will take place at Woodside High.
The freshman/sophomore game will start at 4 p.m. The varsity teams will play under the lights with a start time of 7 p.m.
The winner of the varsity game takes home the Valparaiso Cup for a year.
General admission is $5, and free for children 10 and under. Refreshments will be sold.
All proceeds will go to Peninsula Bridge, which offers a summer enrichment program for local middle-school children who live in under-funded communities. Students attend sessions at Menlo, Sacred Heart, Woodside Priory and Crystal Springs Uplands schools, taking English and math classes, along with art, music, and sports.
In some cases, students eventually end up enrolling at those high schools.
Last year the event raised more than $1,000.
