People: Dr. Blum honored for post-trauma work
(August 31, 2005) Dr. Richard Blum, whose work with soldiers suffering from combat fatigue during the Korean War earned him a Bronze Star earlier this year, has received another honor.
The American Psychological Association recently presented him with its presidential citation award for his exemplary work in post-traumatic stress disorder.
Dr. Blum served in the Army's first psychiatric medical unit as a combat psychologist in 1952.
His efforts in diagnosing and treating combat-related psychiatric casualties and helping soldiers recuperate more quickly led his commanding officer to recommend him for a Bonze Star, but the paperwork was lost or overlooked for 53 years.
Dr. Blum finally received the award in January, after U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo intervened in his behalf.
Business leaders endorse Steve Westly
Steve Westly of Atherton, the state controller and a candidate for governor, has been endorsed by 50 Silicon Valley business leaders, his campaign office recently announced.
John Morgridge, chairman of Cisco; Susan Packard Orr, chair of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation; and Donald Kennedy, president emeritus of Stanford University, are among those endorsing him.
A former eBay executive, Mr. Westly is the second Democrat to announce his gubernatorial candidacy, after state treasurer Phil Angelides.
Recently Mr. Westly reported a contribution to his gubernatorial war chest of $5 million, bringing his total contributions to $15 million.
Mr. Westly, who announced his candidacy June 18, reported he had raised a total of $18.2 million as of the June 30 campaign-finance filing deadline, said his campaign manager, Jude Barry.
