Work in progress at SLAC Work in progress at SLAC (August 31, 2005)

Caption with Marion Softky photo in print edition: Under construction at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center near Menlo Park is a building for the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, an independent laboratory of Stanford University and designed to be a world mecca for the study of the mysteries of the very large and very small: the tiny particles that make up matter; the beginning of the universe; and the invisible dark matter that makes up most of the universe. Initiated by a grant from Fred Kavli and the Kavli Foundation, the institute is funded in part by Stanford and the U.S. Department of Energy. It will open in 2006.
