Vikings open Pop Warner football season
(August 31, 2005) Menlo-Atherton Vikings footballers enjoyed near-unanimous success Sunday, August 28, in a day-long jamboree to open the 2005 Pop Warner season.
The Vikings will play on their home field at M-A High School this Sunday, September 4, as the regular schedule gets underway.
Here are details of August 28 action:
** Tiny Mites. The Vikings' newest team, composed of 5 and 6-year-olds, rolled at will during its first-ever game, notching five touchdowns in a non-scoring contest against East Side of San Jose. Lavell Gates ran 60 yards for a score the first time he touched the ball, and scampered 70 yards for a touchdown shortly after. In all, Gates scored five touchdowns behind crisp blocking led by P.J. Lopez. On defense, Will Ritchey and Reed Schaaf shut down the East Siders.
** Mitey Mites. Peter (Soccer Boy) Bouret scampered for two touchdowns as the Vikings posted six scores against Brentwood. Other running backs who hit pay dirt were Cameron Kirkpatrick and Malcolm Gates, while Adam Greenlow also ran hard and often. Stephen Chu was outstanding on defense.
** Junior Pee Wees. It was a long day for the Vikings Junior Pee Wees, as Oakland's East Bay Wranglers roared to a 32-0 victory. The Vikings have a week to build on their lone bright spot, a second-half comeback that limited the visitors to a single touchdown.
** Pee Wees. A Vikings avalanche brushed aside Brentwood South 41-0 in an offensive show highlighted by Travis McHugh, Tommy Cummings, Sean Barrett, Mark Johnson and Rickie Hoffer. Defenders who stood out included Shane Artim, Jack Gertridge and Christian Perkins. McHugh set the offensive tone on the first play with a 40-yard pass to Jesse Perkins.
** Junior Midgets. The Vikings enjoyed a spectacular home opener with a 36-0 romp over the Brentwood Falcons. Marquise Tolson caught two touchdown passes, and Josiah Paye and Chris Gaertner registered long touchdown runs. The Vikings defense was overwhelming, recovering three Falcon fumbles and pinning the visitors with negative yardage for the game. Defensive standouts were Dan Mohr and Ian Ritchey, while Michael (Buck) Stanek recovered a key fumble.
