David Cleary, 19, of Ladera may have been seriously injured Wednesday, August 31, while riding a motorcycle in the parking lot of a Menlo Park church.

The accident happened as Mr. Cleary was learning to ride a Honda CBR 600 motorcycle in the parking lot of the Mormon Church at 1105 Valparaiso Ave., said Sgt. Van Trask of the Menlo Park Police Department.

Another person was present and teaching Mr. Cleary to ride, police said. He was going in circles on the bike and mistakenly gunned it and drove it into a brick wall. He hit the wall headfirst and broke the helmet he was wearing, police said.

Sgt. Trask said Mr. Cleary reported no feelings from the waist down at the scene. A spokeswoman from Stanford Hospital said Mr. Cleary's condition was serious.
