Woodside: Four people seek council appointment Woodside: Four people seek council appointment (September 07, 2005)

By Andrea Gemmet

Almanac Staff Writer

Four people vying for a seat on the Woodside Town Council should find out this week which one of them will make the cut.

At a special council meeting set for Tuesday, September 6, council members will interview applicants Darrell Batchelder, Susan Doherty, Ron Romines and Matt Shanks.

Residents of District 1, which includes the Woodside Glens neighborhood, were invited to apply for appointment to the Town Council following last month's resignation of Dave Tanner.

Mr. Tanner has moved out of District 1 and is running unopposed for the District 4 seat in the November election. However, his announcement came too late to include the District 1 seat in the fall election.

The council may appoint one of the four, or leave the seat open until an election can be held. According to town rules, a special election could be held in April 2006, at an estimated cost of $20,000.

If the election isn't held in April, the next opportunity will be in November 2007, the next regularly scheduled Town Council election year. Town policy dictates that an election date must be chosen by September 7.

Mr. Batchelder, a sales manager for the Contra Costa Times, has lived in Woodside since 1992. He has served as the co-chair of the Woodside Glens Specific Plan Committee and as a Woodside High School volunteer. He founded the recreation committee's senior softball league and has performed in two Woodside community theater productions.

Ms. Doherty is a marketing consultant and stay-at-home mother. She is the volunteer coordinator of the Glens Moms Group and vice chair of the Woodside Bicycle Committee.

Mr. Romines, an attorney and mediator, has been a Woodside resident since 1972. Among civic activities, he's a past member of the Woodside Recreation Commission and the R-1 Committee, a former chair of the Woodside Glens Specific Plan Committee, and a team leader with his CERPP emergency preparedness neighborhood group. He was an early member of the Woodside School Foundation and was active in five Woodside community theater productions.

Mr. Shanks, a Woodside resident since 1975, is a real estate agent with Cashin Co. His previous experience in civic activities was as a member of the R-1 Committee and the Woodside Glens Specific Plan Committee.

The Woodside Town Council will meet Tuesday, September 6, starting at 7:30 p.m. in Independence Hall, 2955 Woodside Road. Call 851-6790 for information.
